A review in this week’s Cazenovia Republican highlights Circa, a bistro in Cazenovia that recently celebrated the fourth anniversary of its opening.
Opened in February 2006 by chef Alicyn Hart and her husband Eric Woodworth, a Cazenovia native, Circa bills itself as a new American bistro that works “with local farmers and regional artisans” to create “a seasonal menu that changes weekly.” An increasing number of restaurants make similar claims these days, but Circa walks the walk as well as talks the talk. I regularly pester Alicyn about the source of various ingredients, and to the best of my knowledge, every ingredient I have inquired about came from a local or regional farmer, cheesemaker, or producer: lamb from Meadowood Farm in Cazenovia, fresh herbs from Fresh Herbs of Fabius, terrifically flavorful, free-range chickens from Ingallside Meadow Farm of Canastota, etc.
A new law in the Village of Cazenovia serves up a stiff punishment: a maximum $500 fine for hosting an underage drinking party. The second offense could mean two weeks in jail.
Cazenovian Chary Griffin was the local race directory for the U.S. National Snowshoe Championships, held yesterday at Highland Forest county park in Fabius. The Post-Standard has a good article and lots of nice photos; see the link below for the whole thing.
Sunny skies, lots of snow and a big turnout helped make the 10th Annual Powersox U.S. National Snowshoe Championships at Highland Forest in Fabius a success Saturday.
It helped, many competitors said, that the course was among the most difficult they had ever seen. Race organizers laid out a 10K course for both the men and women’s senior championship races (ages 20 and up) that featured a number of hills and varying snow conditions — finishing with a 300-yard uphill stretch leading to the finish line.

Today we have a first here on the Pilot; my daughter (age 10) reviews the place that she, her mother, and I went for brunch today. It was the Poolville Country Store, less than ten minutes from Hamilton, NY.
Today, our family was escorted to a dressy eatery in the calm village of Poolville in New York state. The eatery has a fireplace which is located inside of the dining room. The dining is intimate, which indicates that small groups of customers arrive at a time. To sip on, we had hot wintertime beverages for example, hot chocolate.
For our primary course, or ”appetizer”, my mother and I had the soup du jour, cream of mushroom. My father had crab cakes.
For our secondary course, I had french toast with warm berry compote and breakfast potatoes. My mother had an omelette with breakfast potatoes and orange juice. My father had pork curry.
For our finishing course, we had bittersweet chocolate ice cream. The food was phenomenal. Overall, it was a wonderful meal, so if I were a food critic, I would rate it 5 stars.
